People who go into affiliate marketing all tend to do the same things.
This largely consists of using whatever merchant’s tools are provided and trying to get traffic to the merchant’s sales page. Imagine if thousands of affiliates are basically all doing the same. How would a potential customer differentiate between them? Or would customers get bored with all the repetition and go elsewhere for a similar product?
1 Your own website.
Affiliates hardly ever think of this but it’s fundamental to building an affiliate business and not just an affiliate pastime. Give the website your own identity and branding. Then it is through it that you sell the affiliate products. Have customers remember your website address rather than the merchant’s where they make a one-off purchase. By having your site you can presell the visitor on any product before sending them on to buy. You also get their email address if you’re not using a separate squeeze page.
2 Own tools.
When visitors or email readers see exactly the same ads over and over they become immune to them. You need to create your own ads, including banners if the merchant allows it. You can base your ads on the merchant’s ads but you can give them your own tone, style and branding. In other words, write and produce your own materials to make your ads stand out as individual.
3 Own products.
This may seem contradictory but few affiliate marketers really consider this. With your own website site you can have your own sales pages selling your own products. It’s all part of your branding and, of course, you can make some extra money. However, the main reason is to have customers and visitors returning to your site for new products and materials of various kinds. You can give products away too, with your links in them to create a viral effect as they are passed around to other people.
