<p><span style="color: #000000;">There&#8217;s a lot of buzz today regarding local search and geo-location apps, and why not? When consumers are searching in Google for local services, or searching Yelp and mobile apps for locations, companies want to be there in the results. And it&#8217;s not just large players &#8211; many small retailers are realizing the use and benefits of geo-local search &#8211; namely for competitive edge in brand awareness (as well as instant couponing). Likewise, with the growth of smart phone usage, companies want to be present on mobile in general. And from a broad, overarching perspective, just being &#8220;on mobile&#8221; may not be as difficult as feared.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">The mobile web today is largely composed of websites consumers use anyway on desktop internet (e.g. apps Facebook, Weather, Google Maps, Pandora). So if a company is available or advertising on those channels, they are present on the platform. This gains in importance (as I have read on MediaPost.com), since companies today prefer Facebook for local advertising today over Google.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Yet although apps are the more user-friendly alternative on smart phones, brand websites or landing pages can also be built and optimized for mobile web viewing. For example my contact page on my WordPress blog site comes up particularly well on smart phone. Plus mobile-optimized web pages can be promoted with QR codes for mobile scanning, company info access and even texting opt-ins (see my previous blog post about mobile/location for more on this).</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">But back to local search in general. Some good paths to success in local search just capitalize on existing SEM/SEO (search engine marketing and search engine optimization) fundamentals, such as keyword integration:</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• To appear in search engine local results, location keywords (such as in an address) can be placed in the search-friendly areas of a web page such as the page title, H1s, meta tags and page content.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• Likewise company contact NAP (name, address, phone) should be prominent and exist across the site and web (not just on the contact and directions page).</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• The company website should be registered with (local) directories such as Yahoo! Local and InsiderPages.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• Generally, the more links submitted to Google tools the better for SEO. In this case Google Places and Google Maps can be integrated on the company website (tied to the NAP and Google search in general).</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• And what goes for Google, goes for Bing and Yahoo! tools as well…</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• In fact some search experts say that prominent, up-to-date registration with search engine local tools are unrelated to, and more important than, a company&#8217;s actual website SEO!</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• Consumer reviews likewise achieve a broader web footprint and consequent, elevated search rankings. So companies should encourage and request customer reviews in local-friendly channels such as Yelp, Gowalla and Foursquare.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• But stay away from the &#8220;daily deals&#8221; &#8211; this is a model in demise. And no wonder &#8211; circa 50%-off coupons attract many first-time buyers, but not enough loyal customers to see long-term profitability from such large discounts.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">• And of course SEM/PPC (search engine marketing and pay-per-click) ads can be purchased for location-targeted criteria.</span></p>
