Finding those converting Pay Per Click keywords can be an extremely challenging task. This is especially true in niches where high profits can be made. You see, it is easy to find the big guys because they bid on almost all the obvious terms. Sometimes because it is lucrative and sometimes just for branding purposes. Those keywords are easy to identify as mentioned, but what if you a) cannot afford to drive the same bidding strategy and b) need to find those keywords that really convert.
There is a little trick that you use to identify keywords that have the potential to be good converters. Of course there is no guarantee that these are the top keywords, but chances are you can identify at least some of those.
Depending on which ad network you are using you have probably seen those products that you can promote, but are tied to a whole bunch of restrictions. Often these restrictions are in place because the advertiser is promoting the products himself and they want to limit the competition with their own affiliates. Restrictions can be in regards to the brand name or the display URL and direct linking. However, some advertisers go even further and provide a list of keywords you cannot bid on in PPC marketing. These keywords can be trademarks, brand names, or trademarked competitor names, but some advertisers go even further and provide a list of terms you cannot bid on – because the advertiser is bidding on those and does not want you to bid on them, too.
This is when you want to take a closer look at the list of keywords. Remove anything trademarked and with a little bit of luck you might have some good converting keywords in your hand. Now you might think that you still cannot promote the products of this advertiser, but where is one advertiser there are often many more. Take those keywords and promote the competitor’s products instead. Chances are if keywords are converting for one advertiser they might convert for the competition, too.
You can also take these keywords and use them to build your own keyword list. PPC Marketing is not easy and sometimes it just requires a little head start to get traction. The keywords the advertiser wants to reserve for himself – maybe they give you a different angle to look at the products and how to promote them with a completely different set of keywords.
