Alexa.com is an independent company that ranks all websites on the Internet. They were founded in April of 1996. Alexa’s Web site is built on the notion that timely and relevant information is essential to a vital web experience. Alexa has built an unparalleled database of information about sites that includes statistics, related links and more. All of this information can be found on Alexa’s Site Overview pages, Traffic Detail pages and Related Links pages.
Why is Alexa rankings important to Internet sites? The rankings of Alexa are used by advertisers to find out which sites are “sticky”. This means people are staying on the site and not bouncing from place to place.
The rankings are broken in to these important categories: World Rank, USA Rank, Sites Linking In, and Time on Site. Let’s do a comparison of 3 companies. Social networks hold 4 of the top 11 sites. Facebook is ranked: World-2, USA-2, Sites Linking In-776,492 and Time On Site-31 minutes. Twitter is ranked: World-11, USA-9, Sites Linking In-681,415 and Time On Site-7 minutes. Then there is an up and coming social network called Peoplestring. Peoplestring is ranked: World-1764, USA-684, Sites Linked In 715 and Time On Site-24 minutes. The Time On Site for Peoplestring is what is drawing advertisers to this social network.
By looking at the Alexa rankings, advertisers can see people are spending three times as many minutes on Peoplestring than they do on Twitter each day. They can use this information when deciding where to spend their advertising dollars.
I think the Time On Site category could be the most important category for advertisers. This means the users are getting to the site and “sticking” around. The longer they are on a site the better chance they will have to view an advertisement. This is a winning situation for those in the advertising game.
